  • CHIA Issues Statewide Cross-Sector Analysis of Health Care Workforce Survey
May 24, 2024
CHIA

On Wednesday May 22nd, the Massachusetts Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) released a statewide cross-sector analysis of its inaugural Massachusetts Health Care Workforce Survey in an interactive dashboard. The data collected in the survey aims to provide a critical fact base to inform policies and programs in the health and human service sectors and support ongoing monitoring of workforce trends. The survey period covers May 2023 to January 2024 and collected information from multiple health care sectors including but not limited to hospitals, home care and nursing homes. CHIA partnered with Mass Senior Care (MSCA) to survey members, and previously reported results for the nursing home sector.

Key findings in the cross-sector analysis demonstrate that 65% of employees in leadership roles identified as White, non-Hispanic across all sectors, and that vacancy rates were highest for full time RNs in home care (20%) and nursing homes (19%). Full time RNs also had the highest turnover rates in adult day health (47%), home care (36%) and nursing homes (34%). All sectors reported that raising wages was the most commonly used strategy to recruit and retain workers.
