Dr. Kap Sum Foong at Tufts Medical Center is leading a research study focusing on understanding perspectives related to penicillin allergies in the long-term care setting. Several opportunities are available for nursing facilities to share their thoughts as part of the study.
The study includes the following components:
Interviews or Focus Groups
One part of the study explores the perspectives of long-term care residents, caregivers (e.g., family members), and healthcare providers (e.g., doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) through in-person interviews or focus groups. These sessions are conducted at participating centers and last approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Sessions may be audio recorded with consent; if not, notes will be taken. Each participant reviews a consent information sheet beforehand.
Online Surveys on Penicillin Allergy Removal
Another part of the study involves three brief online surveys over several months to understand healthcare providers’ views on removing inaccurate penicillin allergy labels. Each survey takes about 30 minutes. A consent information sheet is provided.
Online Survey on Electronic Health Record Allergy Sections
A third component involves a one-time 30-minute online survey for healthcare providers about the allergy section of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). The study examines how EHR systems can support safe prescribing. A consent information sheet is provided.
