Governor Maura Healey has appointed Michael Caljouw as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI), the state agency that monitors the solvency of its licensed insurance carriers to ensure a healthy marketplace for consumers who purchase insurance products. DOI also has a key role in consumer protection by providing accurate and unbiased information so consumers may make informed decisions about their insurance coverage, and intervenes on behalf of consumers victimized by unfair business practices. “As the healthcare market in Massachusetts continues to evolve, we look forward to working with Commissioner Caljouw to help shape appropriate policies related to adequacy of payment and reduced administrative burden, including implementation of the new law requiring next day decisions on prior approval requests,” said Tara M. Gregorio, President of Mass Senior Care Association. Caljouw has extensive experience in insurance law and policy in both the public and private sector, including holding executive positions at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.
