  • Massachusetts Unemployment Insurance Error Remains Unresolved
December 4, 2024

As previously reported, during the Baker administration Massachusetts incorrectly used $2.5 billion in federal money to provide unemployment benefits that should have been drawn from the state’s unemployment insurance trust fund. The error occurred during the Covid-19 Pandemic at a time when unemployment had escalated. The mistake does not affect unemployment recipients but has the potential to impact employers if Massachusetts is ultimately required to repay the money to the federal government. Options to resolve this issue include but are not limited to obtaining a federal waiver from the US Department of Labor, drawing from the state’s Rainy Day fund, and/or asking the business community to contribute to all or some of the repayment. Mass Senior Care is advocating for solutions that do not require employers to be assessed and held responsible for repayment of these funds and will continue to provide updates as they are available.
