On August 11, 2025, in a public hearing held by the Department of Public Health (DPH), Mass Senior Care (MSCA) testified in strong support of proposed regulations 105 CMR 775: Certified Medication Aides in Long Term Care Facilities. Establishment of the Certified Medication Aide (CMA) role has long been a priority of MSCA and our members, and we are pleased that we are getting closer to implementation of this innovative role that was passed into law in Chapter 197 of the Acts of 2024. As drafted, the regulation ensures accountability and patient safety by outlining requirements for training, certification, supervision, disciplinary actions, and performance evaluation. By prohibiting the administration of narcotics and medication routes such as injections that require nursing judgment and expertise, we believe the regulation strikes an appropriate balance between expanding access, mitigating risk, and maintaining high standards of care. The DPH will review all comments submitted and return to a Public Health Council meeting for final approval. MSCA will continue to keep members updated on the proposed regulations and on a hybrid online/in-person training program, which is currently on track to be available later this fall.
