  • House Passes Legislation Related to Alzheimer's Disease
July 31, 2026

The Massachusetts House of Representatives unanimously passed H.5621 legislation designed to strengthen the Commonwealth's response to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias by improving patient care, supporting caregivers, and enhancing public awareness. Key provisions of the bill include:

  • Establishes mandatory dementia training programs for municipal and state law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel
  • Expand notification requirements to ensure families or legal representatives are informed when an individual receives an initial diagnosis of dementia.
  • Establish a new MassHealth dementia care coordination benefit for eligible members enrolled in Senior Care Options (SCO) and One Care programs.
  • Strengthen hospital visitation rights by requiring acute care hospitals to permit medically appropriate visitation for patients living with Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, or exhibiting symptoms of cognitive impairment.
  • Requires hospital plans how to treat patients with Alzheimer's and dementia to be ongoing and requires DPH to accept or amend such plans.
  • Enhance public awareness, education, and caregiver support for individuals affected by dementia.

Bill H.5621 now moves to the Massachusetts Senate for consideration. If approved and signed into law, the legislation would further expand the Commonwealth's efforts to improve dementia care, support caregivers, and promote better outcomes for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
