vote 2026

On July 20, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new Safety Special Alert Memo (QSSAM-26-04-NH, reinforcing the importance of protecting the voting rights and autonomy of residents in long-term care facilities. CMS emphasizes that nursing facilities establish a policy and process outlining how the organization supports residents who choose to vote including procedures for obtaining resident knowledge and consent before assisting with voter registration activities. Additionally, the policy should ensure that all voting-related activities are conducted in a manner that protects residents' rights, prevents coercion or undue influence, and does not pressure, direct, or otherwise affect residents' voting decisions or political preferences.

To support member efforts to assist residents with voter registration, Massachusetts Senior Care Association (MSCA) is pleased to launch the Vote 2026 campaign. The Massachusetts State Primary Election will take place on September 1st with the General Election occurring on November 3rd. Voters will have the opportunity to elect Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, U.S. Senator, U.S. Representatives, State Senators, and State Representatives, and vote on approved initiative petitions.

Many of our residents have participated in elections throughout their lives and view voting as an important civic obligation. Ensuring that long term care residents can exercise their constitutional right to vote is of utmost importance and MSCA staff are available to help with voter registration drives and assisting with absentee ballot applications for residents and staff. If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Caitlin Hughes at chughes@maseniorcare.org or (617) 558-0202.
