Nursing facilities provide quality, sophisticated medical care to diverse populations including rehab and sub-acute patients, long term care residents and those requiring specialty care.  At the core of this care is the Director of Nursing Services (DNS), a job that requires dynamic leadership skills and the ability to motivate others to achieve exceptional results. The DNS must also be familiar with the latest changes in clinical care delivery and regulations and be able to manage a multi-disciplinary team model that delivers the highest quality of care to the individuals they serve.

The Massachusetts Senior Care Association is offering a 4-week virtual workshop that provides an opportunity to learn new skills, fine-tune existing knowledge, and operationalize the skills and competencies that are needed to be a nurse leader in the long-term care and sub-acute settings.

This program is geared for nurses who may be transitioning into the role of Director of Nursing in the long-term care or sub-acute setting and for those practicing nurses considering future career development.

Living Life to the End with Dignity, Respect and Understanding

A five-session series for long term care staff via Zoom

Session Dates: September 22, October 6, October 20, November 10 and December 15

All sessions meet from 2:00pm – 3:30 pm via Zoom

Most nursing home residents will experience the end of their life in the care of nursing home staff, often with the help of a hospice team. Discussions about end-of-life wishes are best to have early on in the person’s admission to the nursing home, before there is a change in condition, so that residents, families, and staff are prepared and unnecessary hospital admissions are avoided.

This five-part series will provide training and tools for nursing home staff to develop the skills necessary for talking about end-of-life care and to document these preferences using the MOLST and ePOLST, as well the medical record. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for a team-based, cross continuum approach to communicating end of life wishes across the health care spectrum.

Target Audiences: The caregiving team, including Medical Directors, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses and CNAs, Social Workers, Admission Directors, Administrators

Presenters:

  • Martha Hayward, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Faculty/Lead for Patient/Public Engagement
  • Larissa Lucas, MD, North Shore Physicians Group
