  • Trump Administration Expands Countries with Travel Restrictions and Entry Limitations
December 19, 2025
important update

The federal government has announced an expansion of U.S. travel restrictions affecting additional countries, with new limits on entry and certain visa categories set to take effect January 1, 2026. The White House released a fact sheet regarding the full restrictions and entry limitations of nationals from the original 12 high-risk countries established under Proclamation 10949: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen would continue. The proclamation adds five countries to the full restrictions list including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria and imposes full restrictions on individuals holding Palestinian Authority–issued travel documents as well as on Laos and Sierra Leone, which were previously subject to partial restrictions. An additional 15 countries are now subject to partial restrictions, bringing the total number of countries with full or partial travel limitations to 39. While these measures do not apply to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, employers should be aware and advise employees traveling internationally accordingly.
