On June 17, 2025, CMS announced that it is making permanent a pilot program to identify Medicare billing fraud through its newly created Fraud Defense Operations Center (FDOC). Originally implemented on March 24th, the pilot program identified and saved $105 million through May 2025. The FDOC relies on data-driven analytics, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning models to identify and flag potentially fraudulent behavior by providers for immediate audit review.
