The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN) has posted a website update reporting on the timing and steps necessary for the nurse licensure compact (NLC) to become operational in the Commonwealth. Governor Maura Healey signed the NLC into law on November 20, 2024 and the initial statutory changes necessary for the NLC have been made, however the BORN expects it will take 12 months before the NLC is operational. The reason for the one-year timeline includes the time required for the state to draft and pass certain legislation regarding the authorization to perform federal background checks, the BORN must amend its regulations, information technology systems must be modified to accommodate the new licensure category, and the BORN must update its application process to reflect the ability to obtain a multi-state license if qualified. Please note that nurses who reside in other NLC states and hold a multistate license are not authorized to practice in Massachusetts until the NLC implementation is complete. Mass Senior Care will continue to share information on the NLC as it becomes available.
