  • Current Statutory Authorization Allowing (1) Nursing School Graduate Students to Practice Nursing and (2) Nurses to Provide Skilled Care in an ALR Expired on March 31st
April 4, 2024

The authorization allowing graduate nurses and students in their final semester of nursing education to practice nursing in in-patient health care settings and allowing nurses employed by an Assisted Living Residence (ALR) to provide skilled nursing care in accordance with valid medical orders expired March 31, 2024. The House and Senate conferees continue to work on reconciling separate versions of the FY2024 supplemental budget bill which includes provisions for nursing school graduates and students in their last semester of nursing school to practice nursing until March 31, 2025 as well as extending the ability of ALR nurses to provide skilled care. We recommend nursing facilities temporarily re-deploy their graduate/student nurses as nursing assistants, in other non-licensed roles, or on special projects while supporting them to take their NCLEX as quickly as possible. Mass Senior Care is continuing to work to re-authorize the graduate nursing provision in the final bill.
