  • AHCA Focus MDS Update of the Week – Section O
July 28, 2023

Since their release on April 3, 2023, MDS 3.0 version v1.8.11v2 final item sets and draft RAI guidance were updated and substantial changes were made to several sections. For the next few weeks, AHCA will be focusing on a different section to highlight changes and include what members need to know. This week’s focus is on changes to section O (Special Treatments, Procedures, and Programs) and section Q (Participation in Assessment and Goal Setting) which include:

Section O:

•     The expansion from two columns to three to reflect new timeframes:

  • On admission
  • While a resident
  • At discharge

•     Expansion on several items:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Oxygen
  • Suctioning
  • Non-Invasive Mechanical Ventilator
  • IV Medications
  • Dialysis
  • IV access

Section Q:

  • Reformatting of Question Q0100 (Participation in Assessment) to Q0110 (Participation in Assessment and Goal Setting)
  • Addition of a new question: Q0620, Reason Referral to Local Contact Agency (LCA) Not Made

AHCA has created an MDS Section O and MDS Section Q resource documents to help providers breakdown the changes. The information outlines key changes to MDS Section O and Section Q, Coding Instructions/RAI Guidelines for each item, and Actions to Consider for implementation across your facility.
