As a reminder, effective January 1, 2025, all long-term care facilities must comply with 105 CMR 721.000 – Standards for Prescription Format and Security in Massachusetts. This regulation established a new requirement that most Schedule II through Schedule VI and device prescriptions be issued in a federally compliant, secure electronic format (ePrescribing) rather than on paper or through an electronic system that does not meet federal security requirements. These 2019 revisions were to comply with provisions of chapter 208 of the acts of 2018 (chapter 208 or the CARE Act) and were initially extended to January 2023 and further extended to January 1, 2025. Nursing facilities should work with their LTC pharmacy partners to ensure compliance with the ePrescribing regulation.
