CMS Posts Nursing Home COVID-19 Data and Inspections Results
on Nursing Home Compare
Yesterday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted the first set of COVID-19 nursing home data on its Nursing Home Compare website. Nursing homes are required to report COVID-19 cases and deaths directly to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CMS also posted the results from the targeted inspections announced on March 4, 2020, to allow inspectors to focus on the most serious health and safety threats like infectious diseases and abuse during the pandemic.

We encourage members to carefully check the data on these public use files as we are aware of certain inconsistencies which could present a misleading picture of both the individual facility and the sector in total. To correct errors in reporting, the facility user should log into the NHSN COVID-19 Module, choose the relevant date on the calendar feature and edit their data. Then click Save before exiting. Click here to read the NHSN FAQs. CDC sends data to CMS every Monday morning. When CMS receives it, the facility’s revisions will be reflected with the next update of CMS’ webpage. Therefore, the change will not be immediate on the CMS webpage.
