  • Congressman Neal Visits Life Care Center of Wilbraham to Discuss Impact of Proposed Medicaid Cuts

On Monday, April 14, 2025, Congressman Richard E. Neal visited the Life Care Center of Wilbraham, a Mass Senior Care member facility. During his visit, the Congressman toured the facility and met with staff, facility and corporate leadership to discuss the potential impact of proposed Medicaid cuts on healthcare facilities in the First Congressional District. “We’re always looking at how we can continue to provide these services,” said facility Executive Director, Dennis Lopata. A significant portion of the center’s residents—approximately 80%—rely on Medicaid or Medicare to cover their care.

Congressman Neal’s visit occurred just days after House Republicans passed a budget resolution paving the way for $880 million in cuts to Medicaid. Congressman Neal emphasized that although the resolution passed along party lines, the issue is nonpartisan. “Medicaid is a lifeline and we’re not going to let social services go by the wayside” said Neal. “This is a community. Nobody should be abandoned or left behind and the golden years should be lived out the way we want them to be.”

Life Care Center of Wilbraham is one of several long term care facilities anticipating financial strain as a result of the proposed cuts. According to Lopata, the facility provides care to over 100 individuals and has been focused on staff retention efforts, including increasing wages. Tara Gregorio, President of Mass Senior Care Association noted, “We’ve been offering certified nurse assistants the opportunity to attend trainings. We’ve been making progress, to now pull the rug out from under us — the threats are real and alarming.”

As the debate over Medicaid funding continues, local leaders and care providers remain committed to protecting essential services for seniors and vulnerable populations.
