ADDENDUM
Effective June 21, 2000, the Board of Registration of Nursing issued a statement regarding the limits of medication administration by nurses in an assisted living environment. The board states: “a nurse should never administer any medication that has been removed from its pharmacy-labeled container by another person. A licensed nurse should never administer medication (or assist with SAMM) from a medication cassette or 7 day planner when the medications have been removed from their original, pharmacy-labeled packaging by another person- either a nurse, a patient or a family member- and placed in the cassette/planner. This is true whether a nurse is employed by an assisted living residence or by a certified nursing agency."
