The Trump Administration has notified states that it is immediately terminating a number of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grants that were expected to bring in nearly $100 million to Massachusetts over the next year. The discontinued CDC funds totaling $11.4 billion nationwide are designated for a wide range of essential public health, mental health, and addiction services, such as disease outbreak surveillance, newborn screenings, childhood immunizations, and testing for viruses and other pathogens. The Healey Administration stated that much of the federal grant funding has already been spent and, in many cases, these federal rescissions would force Massachusetts to break existing contracts. State budget writers will now be required to find the money elsewhere in the budget to cover these federal cuts.
