PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
On January 1, 2025, the Department of Public Health will begin enforcing the Putting Patients First statute, G.L., c. 111, s. 228 (“PPF”). Enacted in 2021 and subsequently delayed to January 1, 2025, this law applies to health care facilities, clinics, practitioners and other providers, including skilled nursing facilities. This law requires health care providers to notify patients about charges and payments for proposed admissions, procedures, services, and referrals that are specific to the patient’s insurance carrier.
This law authorizes the DPH, consistent with its authority to regulate health care providers, to penalize providers who fail to comply with a penalty up to $2,500 for each instance of non- compliance. However, penalties may not be issued in the months immediately following the effective date. Facilities are at further risk of losing significant reimbursement for resident stays if they fail to comply with the PPF law.
Mass Senior Care is offering this follow-up webinar with updated information and a copy of our Patient Billing Transparency Law Toolkit which will include template notices.
