Beyond the Behavior: Supporting
MassHealth Add-On Payments Through
Accurate Coding and Documentation

Friday, November 20, 2026
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Virtual

Event Description:
Supporting MassHealth behavioral indicator add-on payments requires clear connections among documented behaviors, MDS coding, and individualized care plans. This session will examine the documentation and audit expectations outlined in Nursing Facility Bulletin 201, focusing on Section E coding, behavioral frequency within the seven-day look-back period, and nursing documentation
of interventions and outcomes. Participants will explore the distinction between rejection of care and resident choice, common documentation gaps, and practical interdisciplinary strategies to support appropriate add-on payments and reduce overpayment risk.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain MassHealth Bulletin 201's documentation and audit expectations for behavioral indicator add-on payments.
  • Identify documentation needed to support behavioral frequency and coding for MDS items E0200A, E0200B, E0200C, E0800, and E0900 within the seven-day look-back period.
  • Differentiate rejection of care from resident choice through assessment, resident education, and individualized care planning.
  • Apply interdisciplinary review strategies to align behavioral documentation, interventions, outcomes, and MDS coding to support appropriate reimbursement and audit readiness.
