CDC

The CDC has recently updated the definition of “up to date” for COVID-19 vaccination status for both residents and health care staff. While this change was initially anticipated to apply only through the first quarter of 2026, the CDC has confirmed that it will remain in effect until further notice. An updated guidance document is expected to be posted on the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) website in April. For NHSN surveillance purposes, individuals are currently considered up to date with COVID-19 vaccination if they meet the following criteria:

Individuals aged 65 years and older are considered up to date if they have:

  • Received two doses of the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine; or
  • Received one dose of the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine within the past six months.

Individuals younger than 65 years are considered up to date if they have:

  • Received one dose of the 2025–2026 COVID-19 vaccine.
