Program Description:
On December 11, 2018, the Acting Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a final rule establishing special management standards for pharmaceutical wastes that are classified as hazardous wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The Final Rule culminates a decade-long effort to tailor the federal hazardous waste program for these wastes, to classify and regulate the wastes as “universal wastes” and to establish an entirely new framework for pharmaceutical wastes. The final rule offers streamlined standards for handling pharmaceutical wastes to better fit the operations of the healthcare sector while maintaining protection of human health and the environment. In addition, as part of this rule, EPA is bolstering the protection of our nation’s waterways by prohibiting the “sewering” of hazardous waste pharmaceuticals. This workshop will review the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and identify strategies for long-term care providers to comply with the final rule for managing pharmaceutical waste.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will:
•Understand the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
•Identify various pharmacy waste streams in compliance with NIOSH, OSHA, EPA, DEP, and state and local standards, and •Identify strategies to manage pharmaceutical waste
